गंगाराम सेवा संस्थान फाउंडेशन का दफ्तर सिंहवाड़ा में है। सेंट्रल बैंक के पास वाली वही गली, जहाँ लोग बैंक का काम निपटाकर अक्सर संस्था के नंबर पर भी कॉल कर देते हैं। बाहर से सुनने में यह छोटी बात लगती है। अंदर से यही छोटी बात संस्था का ठिकाना बनाती है। हम दिल्ली के ब्रोशर से नहीं चले। दरभंगा जिले के एक ब्लॉक से चले, जहाँ गर्मी में धूल उड़ती है और सावन में पानी खेत-आँगन दोनों में घुस आता है।
मिथिला की यह पट्टी सिर्फ संस्कृति के गीतों से नहीं पहचानी जाती। यहाँ स्कूल हैं, लेकिन कॉपी-किताब समय पर नहीं पहुँचती। अस्पताल हैं, लेकिन गाँव से सदर अस्पताल तक का सफर कई परिवार टाल देते हैं — किराया, दिन बर्बाद होना, और यह डर कि डॉक्टर मिल भी जाएँ तो दवाई का खर्च अलग पड़ेगा। बाढ़ के साल में रास्ता टूटता है। तब राशन की थैली किसी भाषण से ज्यादा काम की होती है। संस्था इन्हीं साधारण जगहों पर खड़ी रहती है।
शिविर का दिन सुबह से शुरू होता है। बरामदे में दो मेज लगती हैं। एक पर रजिस्टर, दूसरी पर बीपी मशीन और शुगर की पट्टी। बूढ़ी औरतें लाल साड़ी में बैठी इंतजार करती हैं। बच्चे कतार तोड़कर आगे आ जाते हैं। स्वयंसेवक नाम लिखते-लिखते थकते हैं, फिर भी लिखते हैं। दवा का डिब्बा खाली हुआ तो पड़ोस के मेडिकल से फिर मँगाना पड़ता है। यह दृश्य विज्ञापन जैसा चमकदार नहीं होता। लेकिन जो आदमी बुखार लेकर आया और शाम को गोली लेकर गया, उसके लिए यही काम काफी है।
शिक्षा का काम शिविर से अलग है। कुछ बच्चे स्कूल जाते हैं, कुछ मवेशी चराने चले जाते हैं। हम पूरे स्कूल नहीं चलाते। हम उतना करते हैं जितना हाथ में आता है — कॉपी, पेन, कभी यूनिफॉर्म, कभी परीक्षा से पहले एक छोटी बैठक। बालिकाओं के मामले में परिवार पहले हिचकिचाते हैं। जब दो-चार घरों में लड़की नियमित स्कूल पहुँचने लगती है, तब बाकी घर भी पूछते हैं कि फॉर्म कहाँ से मिलेगा। यह बदलाव नारे से नहीं, पड़ोस की बातचीत से आता है।
राहत का काम मौसम देखकर चलता है। बाढ़ आई तो नाव वाले से सामान पार कराना पड़ता है। आग लग गई तो रात में कपड़ा और चावल पहुँचाना पड़ता है। ऐसे दिनों में फोटो खींचने का मन कम होता है, हिसाब रखने का मन ज्यादा। कौन परिवार को कितना दिया, कौन सदस्य मैदान में था — यह नोट रहना चाहिए। पारदर्शिता का अर्थ कागज की मोटी फाइल नहीं, साफ जवाब है। कोई पूछे कि पैसा कहाँ गया, तो काम का ब्यौरा बताया जा सके।
संस्था बिहार से संचालित है, लेकिन दरवाजा सिर्फ दरभंगा के लिए नहीं खुला। दिल्ली, पटना, मुंबई, गुवाहाटी से फोन आते हैं। कोई कहता है कि गाँव में मामा रहते हैं, शिविर लगवा दो। कोई कहता है कि वेतन से पाँच सौ भेजना है। हम हर फोन पर तुरंत शिविर का वादा नहीं करते। पहले जगह देखते हैं, स्थानीय आदमी देखते हैं, खर्च का हिसाब देखते हैं। देशव्यापी काम का मतलब हर जिले में बोर्ड लगाना नहीं है। मतलब यह है कि सहयोग देश के किसी भी राज्य से आ सकता है, और जरूरत पड़ी तो टीम दूसरे जिले में भी जा सकती है।
सदस्यता इसी सोच से खुली रखी गई है। फॉर्म भरने के बाद मोबाइल पर बात होती है। आईडी कार्ड तभी बनता है जब नाम-पता साफ हो। स्वयंसेवक के लिए उम्र की दीवार नहीं रखी गई। जिम्मेदारी समझना जरूरी है। शिविर में गाली-गलौज, राजनीति की झंडी, या चंदा के नाम पर दबाव — ये चीजें संस्था के काम को बिगाड़ती हैं। जो शांत रहकर लाइन लगवा सके, वही ज्यादा उपयोगी है।
आगे का रास्ता लंबा है। रजिस्ट्रेशन की कॉपी, बैंक विवरण, वार्षिक सार — ये पेजों पर धीरे-धीरे पूरे होंगे। तब तक कार्यालय का नंबर वही है: 7763941383। व्हाट्सएप पर नाम, गाँव और जरूरत लिखकर भेज दें। हम वादा नहीं करते कि हर माँग पूरी होगी। वादा इतना है कि बात दब जाएगी नहीं। सिंहवाड़ा से निकली यह संस्था अगर टिकी रही, तो इसी साधारण ईमानदारी की वजह से टिकी रहेगी।
लोग अक्सर पूछते हैं कि संस्था का काम “बड़ा” कब बनेगा। बड़ा काम का मतलब हमारे यहाँ फ्लायर पर छपी संख्या नहीं है। बड़ा काम तब है जब सिंहवाड़ा के बाद अगला गाँव खुद बुलाए, जब कोई दानदाता बिना नाम छपवाए राशि भेजे, जब शिविर के बाद शिकायत की जगह यह बात आए कि अगली तारीख क्या है। मिथिला के गाँव संख्या से नहीं, रिश्ते से चलते हैं। रिश्ता टूटा तो दस बैनर भी बेकार हैं।
पर्यावरण का काम भी इसी लय में है। पौधा लगा देना आसान है, दो गर्मी तक पानी देना मुश्किल। इसीलिए वृक्षारोपण स्कूल या सार्वजनिक जगह पर ही रखा जाता है, जहाँ कोई रोज़ देख सके। स्वच्छता बैठक नाली के किनारे होती है, सभागार में कम। जो बात गाँव वाली भाषा में कही जाए, वही याद रहती है। हिंदी-मैथिली दोनों चलती हैं। अंग्रेज़ी उन साथियों के लिए है जो बाहर से पढ़कर सहयोग करना चाहते हैं। साइट इसीलिए दोनों भाषाओं में रखी गई है।

Gangaram Seva Sansthan Foundation sits in Singhwara, next to the Central Bank lane in Darbhanga district, Bihar. People finish bank work and often dial the same stretch of road for a camp date or a bag of rice. That geography matters. This is not an office invented for a brochure. It is a block where dust rises in May and rain walks into courtyards in Sawan. Mithila is sung about for its art. It is also a place where a government school exists on paper and a notebook does not always exist on the bench.
The hospital in town is real. The bus fare, the lost wage, and the cost of medicine after the prescription are also real. Families postpone the trip. A camp in the village does not replace a hospital. It catches the fever, the sugar reading, the blood pressure that would otherwise wait till it became an emergency. Two tables, a register, a machine, a volunteer who can still write names after noon — that is the shape of most camp days.
Education work is quieter. The Foundation does not run a full school. It sends copies, pens, sometimes a uniform, sometimes a meeting before exams. Girls are the first to be held back when money is tight. When two or three houses send a daughter regularly, other houses ask where the form is. That question is worth more than a banner.
Relief follows the weather. Flood weeks need a boatman as much as they need a donor. Fire in a thatch house needs clothes the same night. Photographs feel less urgent than a list: which house received what, who from the team was present. Transparency here is not a thick file for display. It is the ability to answer when someone asks where the money went.
The organisation is run from Bihar. The door is not locked to the rest of India. Calls come from Delhi, Patna, Mumbai, Guwahati. A nephew wants a camp in his mama’s village. A worker wants to send five hundred rupees from a salary account. Every call does not become a camp. First the place, then a local person who will stand there, then a cost that can be explained. Working across India does not mean a board in every district. It means a donation or a membership can start from any state, and a team can travel when the ground is ready.
Membership stays open for the same reason. After the form there is a phone call. An ID card is made only when the name and address are clear. Volunteers are not filtered by age. They are filtered by conduct. A camp is a line of tired people. Politics, shouting, or pressure in the name of donation breaks the line. The useful volunteer is the one who keeps the line moving and goes home without a speech.
Paperwork will catch up — registration copies, bank details, a yearly summary on the reports page. Until then the number remains 7763941383. Write the name of the village and the need on WhatsApp. Not every request can be met. The promise is smaller and harder: the message will not be pushed under a file. If this Foundation lasts, it will last because Singhwara still recognises that kind of plain dealing.
People ask when the work will become “big”. On this road, big does not mean a printed figure on a flyer. Big is the next village calling on its own. Big is a donor who sends money and does not ask for a photograph of his name. Big is the sentence after a camp: when is the next date. Mithila villages run on ties. If the tie breaks, ten banners will not repair it.
Plantation follows the same pace. Putting a sapling in the ground is easy. Watering it through two summers is the actual work. That is why trees go to a schoolyard or a public patch someone sees every day. Cleanliness talks happen near the drain, not only in a hall. The sentence that stays is the one spoken in the language of the lane — Hindi, Maithili, and English for those who read from another city and still want to help.
